We’ve seen the DS take off in the last year, both with hardware and software sales. But one thing I’ve noticed is that the DS has almost no strategy RPGs. Consider that the GBA had the following strategy RPGs [and I've probably omitted others]:
- Golden Sun and a sequel
- Fire Emblem and a sequel
- Final Fantasy Tactics Advance
- Tactics Ogre: The Knight of Lodis
- Disgaea: Hour of Darkness
Currently, I know of Hoshigami: Ruining Blue Earth Remix and [depending on your definition] Advance Wars: Dual Strike.
I didn’t realize until recently the absence of strategy RPGs for the DS [thanks to another post I'm drafting]. I understand that Nintendo has been making more casual gaming overtures lately, but that shouldn’t affect third-party publishers.
The good news is that the tactical rpgs for the ds are coming, like wakfu, fire Emblem (TBA), and front mission (Oct 2007). I’m not sure about Super Robot Wars W releasing in the States.
I think an updated port of Jagged Alliance would be great for the DS, which was announced but hasn’t had an update in a while.

you’re in luck, my friend: Luminous Arc is a DS strategy rpg from Atlus and it comes out in the US in about a week
Yes, I meant to include that one.
FF:Tactics has a version in development. Don’t know the release date.
Also, Heroes of Mana and one of the upcoming FF games are RTS’s. Heroes didn’t get great reviews but I’m keeping an eye on it – what I’ve read makes it sound like an RTS-lite. Since I suck at RTS’s that would be perfect for me.
Also, wasn’t there a homebrew warlords game and a homebrew x-com, both in development? And I think an official warlords port was announced sometime or another, although I have no idea when it’s supposed to come out.
All in all, I agree that it’s currently slim pickings, but there’s a metric ton of games on the horizon.
